THE PROBLEM OF DEPRESSION

THE ROOTS OF DEPRESSION
Psychologists tell us that millions suffer from depression, with more than 3 million cases per year in the US alone, and that most suicides, - with more than one million suicides per year world-wide - are desperate attempts to escape deep depression. Even more alarming, is the fact that the extreme act of suicide seems to be on the increase. Many reasons are given for this, including the decline, especially in highly developed countries, of religious affiliation, stress and loss of meaning and/or purpose in life.

Most of you, who follow my posts here, know that I have often reported on, and celebrated, a very blessed, full and adventurous life. So what would I know about depression? First, almost no one experiences a perfect life, filled with endless happiness and joy; and, second, I no longer have my soulmate, Jacqui, physically by my side, as I did for more than 40 years. Also, I have memories of previous lives during which I suffered horribly and died miserable deaths. Whether those lives are real or imagined, the memories real or somatic records in my DNA of the lives of ancestors, makes no difference – I, as surely every human being alive has, have tasted the bitter bile of depression. Despite the scientific evidence I have that her consciousness still exists, I still cry myself to sleep some nights, because I miss her so much!

So, why do we suffer from depression? Here’s what I think: It’s the result of ego-attachment and thwarted-will related to physical expectations. We are spiritual beings who have consented to become involved for a time in the Sturm und Drang of physical existence on this planet. As such, we know that we are immortal, and cannot be harmed in any real or permanent way. But attachment to physical things and expectations related to specific physical outcomes, makes us forget our true nature. When in the throes of this forgetfulness, we begin to doubt the reality of our spiritual nature and fear the pain of failure, death and destruction. For anyone who has tasted the immortality of Spirit, and remembers it, even subconsciously, this is terribly depressing, and ushers in the Dark Night of the Soul.

So what of people who have no memory of their spiritual origin or knowledge of their spiritual nature, or belief in anything beyond the sliver of reality called the physical world, and sink deep into seemingly endless depression and despair? We must encourage them to reach out in faith to Spirit, in whatever way makes sense to them (Jesus, Abraham, Buddha, Kabir, Universal Light, etc.) and ask that their mental state be altered in a positive way. The Dark Night of the Soul is a black hole sucking all material things into its maw, but that great suction has no effect at all on the soul, because the soul is Spirit, and thus, like gimmel, it is non-physical.

Suicide is not bad for the soul because it is the inglorious end, in fact it is not the end at all. Those who try it find it is just a temporary escape route that requires more work the next time around. It is bad because it delays overcoming the Dark Night of the Soul, which is the purpose of life.

GRATITUDE

I AM SO THANKFUL

I am so thankful for this day,

When I think upon the many things
that make it differrent from the rest;

It’s unique in at least a million ways,
Here’s some of them I like the best:

I am ALIVE today, to enjoy this life
That’s mine alone, and no other’s

To move beyond the toil and strife
And feel the Love of countless lovers

Who planted flowers along the way.
…I am so thankful for this day!

The Earth turns on, beneath my feet
And the stars swirl above my head,

I taste the joys of life, so sweet;
I’m among the quick, not the dead!

I am so thankful for this day!

This day is what it is because
Of all the days now gone before.

I‘m the sum of my deeds and flaws,
Of all my days, and something more:

I am thankful because I know
I‘m more than just the sum of parts;

I am the flower in the snow,
I am the joy in countless hearts!

Yes, I‘m so thankful I can say:
I‘m so thankful for this day!

BELIEF AND REALITY, MEANING AND PURPOSE

THE MEANING AND PURPOSE OF EXISTENCE
©Edward R. Close  2019

Disclaimer: What I have to say in this article, especially about the role of gimmel in Reality, meaning and purpose, is my opinion and mine alone. I make no claim as to who else may or may not share my views.

BELIEF AND REALITY
Your life is determined by what you believe. And for most people now inhabiting physical bodies on this planet, what you believe depends upon the amount of Reality you have experienced directly yourself, plus that which you accept as real from what others have told you. But that which others tell you may be true, partially true, or it may not be true at all. So be careful what you accept as true, accept nothing blindly, put it to the test of Reality as you know it. To the extent that what you believe is identical with Reality, your life will be what it is meant to be. When what you believe becomes 100% identical with Reality, you will have reached the Great Goal of Conscious Existence. But this is a rare condition for inhabitants of this planet at this point in time. One only reaches that level of consciousness when the time is right, and the Mind is ready. The process of reaching the state wherein you are capable of realizing that goal is called spiritual evolution. Thus it is of utmost importance to look often, and deeply, into what you believe. Your happiness, your well-being and your future depend upon it.

THE DISCOVERY OF GIMMEL
Why do I bring gimmel up in this context? Because it is a direct link to a major part of the universe that is not available to the physical senses. The vast majority of Reality is not available to us through our physical senses because it is composed of non-physical gimmel. A major part of Reality is, in this sense, hidden. This is not a flaw in the way the universe is created, it is a necessary limitation on the physical vehicles of evolving souls. I discovered gimmel in 2012, while in the process of developing a system of quantum mathematics and applying it to quantal descriptions of the combinations of the elementary particles that form the atomic elements that make up the universe we experience. I realized immediately that this was the first step necessary in putting consciousness into the equations of science, something I had been seeking to do since the 1970s when I wrote The Book of Atma.

QUANTUM REALITY: MASS, ENERGY AND GIMMEL
Stable Reality is made up of quanta of mass, energy and gimmel. There would be no stable atomic structure without gimmel. The precise combinations of quanta of the three forms of Reality, mass, energy and gimmel, that make up the physical reality of quarks, protons, neutrons, and atoms, are calculable fairly easily using the quantum math we call the calculus of dimensional distinctions. The paradigm shift from the current mainstream materialistic paradigm to the Reality of mass. energy and consciousness, that we call the Triadic Dimensional Vortical Paradigm (TDVP), is derived directly from the data of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) using mathematics available to anyone conversant with high school algebra and geometry. The derivation of the new scientific paradigm, including consciousness in the equations, has been published in several venues available to anyone, including this blog site. It has been validated by explaining paradoxes and experimental observations and data that are not explainable in the current mainstream paradigm.

REALITY IS A UNIVERSE OF MEANING AND PURPOSE
With the discovery and validation of gimmel, and its role in the evolution of the physical universe, we now know that the evolving universe is not the result of random processes, it is the purposeful and meaningful evolution of physical organisms to act as vehicles through which individualized manifestations of Spirit can experience physical reality. Consciousness, as the manifestation and expression of Primary Consciousness (traditionally called Spirit) in the physical universe, is primary, with gimmel as its agent, organizing stable structures of matter and energy in the continuing formation of the universe for the purpose of the spiritual evolution of individuals from the bare awareness of self from other-than self, to Cosmic Consciousness. The fact that the percentage of non-physical gimmel in the elements that make up the universe known to our current science is identical to the percentage of so-called dark matter and dark energy detected by the Hubble Probe, is evidence that the universe, not just this planet, is structured by Primary Consciousness for the purpose of the development of living organisms capable of being controlled by individualized consciousness for the purpose of spiritual evolution. (Calculation of the volumetric ratio of gimmel to Hadronic matter and energy, showing its correspondence to Hubble Probe data has also been published by Neppe and Close.)

TIME, SPACE AND CONSCIOUSNESS
Just as mass, energy and gimmel are the triad of variables of substance, or content of Reality, time, space and conscious imagery are the triad of variables of extent, in which the substance is contained as stable manifestations of the logic of Primary Consciousness. They are created by the stable existence of mass, energy and gimmel, and have no existence of their own. Thus Consciousness is Primary and omnipresent, as the ocean must seem to the fish who dwell deep within it; gimmel is secondary, as the organizer, and matter and energy are tertiary. All of this is describable with the Calculus of Dimensional Distinctions as nine dimensional domains nested within the infinity of Primary Consciousness.

MORE ON GIMMEL AND CONSCIIOUSNESS

MORE ON GIMMEL AND CONSCIOUSNESS
© 2019 by Edward R. Close

The Significance of the Discovery of Gimmel
Non-physical gimmel is real and at least as important in the structure of physical reality as mass and energy and it very well may provide us with a refreshing new avenue to investigate consciousness in a systematic, scientific manner. In this discussion, I will use the triad of mass, energy and gimmel to address an important and very basic question about the nature of consciousness: the question of whether consciousness is an epiphenomenon of physical complexity, or the architect of it; in other words, which came first, matter or consciousness?

The current mainstream paradigm assumes that particulate matter, in the form of quarks, electrons, and protons, evolved first, producing hydrogen and other elements billions of years ago, and that self-aware consciousness arose only very recently, after sufficiently complex organic structures had evolved. But this is a very restricted view of consciousness, assuming that it is limited to the self-awareness in human beings and functioning perhaps, to a lesser extent, in other living organisms. In the light of the discovery of the necessary existence of gimmel in every single elementary particle for atomic stability, we have evidence that the logical structure of consciousness exists in every particle of the physical universe, suggesting that the reasoning leading to the mainstream model may be flawed. Consciousness, not matter, may be primary.

Consciousness and the Physical Universe
Self-aware sentient beings, in particular, human beings like you and me, are born into a world where an amazing plethora of complexity already exists, and apparently has existed for billions of years. Some of us, sometimes called scientists, are capable of conceptualizing different levels of complexity, and using objects that exist around us to build laboratories and instruments to investigate some of the existing complex objects discovered by those who have preceded us, like the atoms known as the elements of the periodic table.

The reality you experience, including your own body, appears to be made of a range of complex molecular and atomic structures, in turn made of electrons, protons and neutrons. Clever scientists before us have discovered that protons and neutrons are further composed of even more elementary entities, known as quarks: specifically of two sizes, called up-quarks and down-quarks, for reasons we need not go into here. All of these objects making up our environment appear to be made of atoms, starting with the simplest atom, the hydrogen atom, consisting of only one electron and one proton, ranging through more and more complex atoms consisting of hundreds of electrons, protons and neutrons; so everything appears to be made of atomic structures composed of only three things: electrons, up-quarks and down-quarks. Some of the atoms, at a certain level of complexity, combine to form life-supporting organic compounds that join together and form self-aware organisms like you and me, capable of conscious experience.

Limitations of the Standard Model of Particle Physics
When we decided to study these complex structures, to see what makes them work with Swiss-watch-like precision, we started with the hydrogen atom, the smallest and simplest structure existing at or near the threshold of observation and measurement using our physical senses and conceivable extensions of them. Gradually, we devised increasingly more sophisticated ways to break atoms apart and measure the mass and energy of the constituent particles indirectly. We had to devise indirect methods to do this because the sub-atomic constituents (electrons and quarks) are so very, very small that we couldn’t observe and measure them directly.

The methods we devised were intrusive and destructive, including ionization (forcing electrons out of the outer-most shell of atoms) and engineering collisions of protons (obtained by the ionization of hydrogen atoms) with each other and other atoms. More and more sophisticated methods were developed for accelerating particles and targeting other particles and atoms. Using powerful electromagnets, particles were accelerated to extreme velocities, with momentums great enough to penetrate complex atoms and break them apart. The atom-smashers, from the earliest versions, built in the late 1920s and early 1930s, from the Cyclotron, to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in use today, employ the same method: blasting atoms apart and examining the resulting fragments.

The Swiss watch analogy is instructive: An atom, considered as a finite object, separate from any more complex structure, is, like a fine Swiss watch, an intricate, dynamic structure of interacting parts. If you decide to take a watch apart to see how it works, hopefully, you have the appropriate watch-maker’s tools on hand, so that you can take it apart carefully, in order to observe how each cog-wheel, spring and ratchet operates and how they work together to produce a precise and accurate time-keeping instrument. But suppose you are a five-year-old child, and the only tool you have is a hammer. You manage to pop the case apart, but the mystery of how the clock works is not immediately apparent, so you continue to hammer it until you have produced as many bits and pieces to look at as you can. When you finally stop  hammering, the various constituent parts may be so damaged and even broken into pieces in the smashing process that, their function while they were in the watch is totally obscured.

If we count the number of pieces scattered around when our five-year old is finished hammering, we may have many times more pieces than the number of parts used in the construction of the watch, and studying them will not likely lead to much understanding of how a watch works. Particle physicists are like children with hammers. Their standard model of reality based on destructive collisions consists of as many as 80 or 90 particles and anti-particles. But most of these particles are not functional in the atoms making up the everyday stable world we experience, they are created by the atom-smashing process, and they decay rapidly, lasting for  only very extremely short periods of time under extreme high-energy conditions, which may or may not have existed at the time of the hypothetical big-bang origin of the universe.

The physical reality we experience is built up primarily of the mass and energy of three particles: electrons, protons and neutrons, combined in various stable configurations. And protons and neutrons are primarily comprised of the mass and energy of up-quarks and down-quarks, so at the most elementary level, the physical features of everything we experience in our lives on this planet are the results of combinations of electrons and quarks and the associated gravitational, magnetic and electro-magnetic forces that are generated as results of their interactions in space and time. The other members of the particle zoo, generated by the hammering of particles together in high-energy particle colliders, while interesting from a theoretical point of view, are so ephemeral they have little or no effect on the physical reality we experience as sentient beings.

Deriving and Applying a System of Quantum Equivalence Units
We have concluded that the basic building blocks of our physical reality, measurable in units of mass, energy and volume of space, spinning at some specific number of rotations per unit of time, are electrons, up-quarks and down-quarks. The free electron has the least mass of the three, and if we take that mass as the quantum unit of mass, normalize and naturalize the LHC masses of the up-quark and down-quark, we find that they have masses of 4 and 9 quantum mass units respectively. Then, by naturalizing the units of space and time (extent and duration), Einstein’s famous equation, E = mc2 yields  a system of measurement in which the units of mass, energy, space, and time are equivalent. Noting that quarks, because they are rotating physical objects, are three-dimensional, I call these 3-D units quantum equivalence units. In the geometry of symmetrical rotating objects, application of Fermat’s Last Theorem proves that quarks must combine in threes to produce stable rotating objects. Because of these facts, the resulting basic units of quantum calculus are called Triadic Rotational Units of Equivalence (TRUE).

Using the TRUE as the basic unit of the Calculus of Dimensional Distinctions, an adaptation and expansion of G. Spencer Brown’s Calculus of Indications, from his seminal work Laws of Form, we have, for the first time since Planck discovered that physical reality is quantized, a quantum calculus appropriate for the investigation of quantum phenomena. With application of this system of mathematical logic, we are able to solve a number of puzzles that have plagued particle physics for decades, like explaining the EPR paradox, the double-slit and delayed-choice experiments, as well as explaining why the Cabibbo quark-mixing angle has the exact value it does, why fermions have an intrinsic spin number of ½, why neutrons and other complex particles have the exact masses they do, and much more.

A Wider Range of the Scientific Investigation of the Nature of Reality
By developing the proper tools for investigating quantum phenomena, and applying them to the known parameters of the elementary particles that make up the physical universe we experience, a third form of the substance of reality, necessary for structural stability, was discovered. We call that third form gimmel. Each and every elementary particle has to have an exact number of mass, energy and gimmel units to be stable, and thus the amount of gimmel in every combination of particles in physical reality can be mathematically determined. When this method of analysis was applied to the elements of the periodic table, we found that the major life-supporting elements, carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen, contain higher percentages of gimmel than other elements, especially those that are poisonous or detrimental to consciousness-supporting life. This strongly suggests that the universe is the result of intelligent design. The discovery of gimmel reveals that the self-referential structure of the physical universe is designed very specifically to support the development of complex living organisms capable of manifesting increasingly sophisticated forms of consciousness.

So what is gimmel that makes it capable of affecting the nature of the physical universe in this way? It is not some form of matter, or some form of energy, as I’ve pointed out in the previous post, because if it were, it would add to the measurable mass and/or energy of the particles that form protons, they would no longer be quarks, atomic structure would be unstable, and there would be no physical universe as we know it. Science can only describe what we experience and become consciously aware of through physical, mental or spiritual perception. That means that to understand what gimmel is, we have nothing but our experience to draw from.

Consciousness is the only thing we experience directly. Matter, energy, space and time are experienced indirectly through the reduction valves of the physical sense organs that only allow vibrational energies of specific ranges of frequencies to be channeled to the central nervous system where they are converted to images. Space and time have no existence of their own because space is simply the dimensional extent around and between objects, and time is the duration between events. Without objects and events, there is no space or time. So there are only three sources of our experiences: matter, measured as mass, energy, measured as force, and pure consciousness, measured as individual awareness. Since gimmel cannot be matter or energy, by process of elimination, it is pure consciousness.

Historically, when pure consciousness has been perceived in the midst of physical reality by finite self-aware individuals, it has been called the Holy Spirit. To complete the only model that is able to describe everything we can experience as human beings, we need only envision three finite dimensional domains of three dimensions each, embedded in an infinity of pure consciousness. All of the laws of physical, mental and spiritual reality are conveyed into the dimensional domains of finite quantized reality mathematically from pure consciousness in the mathematical ratios of mass, energy and gimmel.

There could be no particles, no hydrogen atoms and no physical universe without gimmel. If, as concluded above, gimmel is pure consciousness, then consciousness is primary and matter secondary, not the other way around as assumed by the materialist mainstream scientific paradigm.

Pure consciousness, represented in the structures of the physical universe, is Planck’s “conscious intelligent spirit”, and Einstein’s “spirit … manifest in the laws of the Universe - a spirit vastly superior to that of man, and one in the face of which we with our modest powers must feel humble.”(See the previous post.)

OUR BIGGEST MISTAKE AND THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE

MANKIND’S BIGGEST MISTAKE
AND THE FUTURE OF SCIENCE
The biggest error in modern science, and human thought in general, is conceptual fragmentation. As a sentient species, we have been approaching the problem of understanding reality piecemeal, focusing on different parts of reality as if they were independent of each other, and independent of the whole. As a result, educational and academic institutions are fragmented into separate specialization fields, and we often choose one part of reality as real, and ignore the rest, as if it didn’t exist. This is why there are paradoxes and conflicts in science, and in human life in general. But reality is not fragmented. It functions as a seamless whole, and it is now time to integrate our search for truth.

In regard to the mistake of fragmentation, the “man” in mankind is appropriate for use in describing the civilizations of the past few thousand years on this planet, because men, with greater physical strength, needed to assure the survival of the species, have dominated the traditional scientific and religious efforts to understand reality, forcing integrative approaches like shamanism, psychism and mediumship, into the fringes of acceptable thought, rejected by the mainstream establishment thinkers. Women, who are generally more in touch with the non-physical side of reality, are more likely to be involved in the spiritual life of Western Civilization, even though historically, they have been banned from participating in leadership roles in the dominant establishment institutions. When I was an undergraduate physics student in the late 1950s, young women were scarce in the halls of science and engineering. There was only one in the upper-level math courses I took, and none in upper-level physics. Female doctors and scientists were few, and not well accepted. Most religious institutions did not allow women to become priests or ministers. The ban on women in institutionalized leadership roles has changed drastically in the last 50 years, and, in my opinion, is one indication that re-integration of the organized investigation of reality is at last under way.

With the discovery by Neppe and Close in 2011 of gimmel, the non-physical part of reality necessary for the formation of stable atomic structures leading to life-supporting organic compounds, we have proof that what has traditionally been called “spirit” precedes and underlies all of reality. This discovery, and the development of a quantum calculus appropriate for finite quantum reality, encompassed in infinitely continuous Primary Consciousness, provides a comprehensive basis for integrating the search for truth and the understanding of the true nature of reality.

Physical reality, it turns out, as quantized mass and energy, makes up less than 5% of Reality. Consciousness, the manifestation of Spirit, makes up the other 95-plus percent. But, through the prisms of the limited physical senses, and the most well-developed image-forming capabilities of the brain, our awareness is dominated by the finite physical four-plus percent. This was necessary for the survival of the human species through which Spirit manifests and expresses itself, but with the immediacy of the struggle for physical survival pushed to the background by advances in technology, we are poised on the threshold of the science of the future. With the discovery of gimmel, the measurement of consciousness in the structures of reality becomes as scientific, precise and accurate, as the measurement of mass and energy.

Beyond the threshold, the entrenched dualistic dialectic of materialism will be replaced by the triadic holism of the manifestation of the logical structure of Primary Consciousness, -or Spirit, as finite, quantized mass, energy and consciousness. It will become clear that, in addition to the five different electricities that carry information from objective reality to the brain, there are additional forms of vibratory energy that carry more subtle information revealing the underlying spiritual structure of reality. Because of the natural plasticity of the human brain, it will be able to develop and evolve to perceive and understand the mathematical relationships between the physical four-plus percent of reality and the underlying spiritual nature of Reality.

Note: The derivation of the quantum equivalence unit and the subsequent discovery of gimmel has been published in several places, including the ECAO Journal and the IQNexus Journal, and can be found on this blogsite by searching for “gimmel”.
